Mission Statement
The mission of AtmosTheatre is to bring theatre alive by actively engaging our audience in found or unusual spaces.
Description
In 2002, five artists who believed that audience members should not be merely spectators, but an integral part of the atmosphere of the play joined creative forces and founded AtmosTheatre. Since it's founding AtmosTheatre has created thirteen total productions (two currently underway), including eight under the branch of Theatre in the Woods, and three under the branch of TheatrePub.
Theatre in the Woods
Theatre in the Woods allows audiences an outdoor theatrical experience that is unique to any other theatre company in the Bay Area. When patrons arrive at the beautiful and secluded venue, they are led to a picnic grove where they enjoy a light summer meal with friends and other theatre patrons. The audience is then ushered down a beautiful nature trail lined with Oak, Douglas Fir, Redwood, California Bay and Madrone trees to reach the first main stage. Actors are already moving about creating the scene, while the audience settles themselves onto the handmade redwood benches. As the play progresses, actors lead the audience through the remaining five acres of forest, stopping at various points along the way for scenes, and leading finally to a beautiful redwood amphitheatre. The hike is done at a leisurely pace, and audiences of all ages have enjoyed it. Shows are held annually in late summer in Woodside, CA and regularly sell out. In 2010, Theatre in the Woods will produce its most ambitious production to date - Alice in Wonderland.
TheatrePub
A long-held dream and newly created branch of AtmosTheatre, TheatrePub brings theatre to San Fransisco bar patrons. Currently being staged monthly at Café Royale with free admission, TheatrePub productions range from staged readings to original works, and last approximately one hour. Like all of the work AtmosTheatre endeavors to accomplish, TheatrePub is focused on drawing audience members into the atmosphere of the play. Rather than traditional theatre patrons sitting in seats watching actors on a stage, TheatrePub brings the stage to the bar, and the audience becomes an integral part of the production.
