Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve the physical, educational, and social situation of orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Description
Through grants to Congolese organizations, as well as awareness-raising in the US and beyond, we provide the opportunity for individuals and communities to support young people in a region devastated by ongoing conflict and natural disaster.
Our primary partner in the DRC, CAMME DRC operates entrepreneurship, vocational education, and arts/cultural reintegration programs that have served more than 3,000 children since opening in 2007. CAMME also operates Youth Inspirations Academy, a bilingual (English/French) pre-and-primary school that today enrolls more than 300 students, ages 3-9.
Our work is based on six pillars, all with a common goal- the children of DRC achieve their true potential, educationally, professionally, and personally . Our partner organizations:
Advocate for children abandoned by or separated from their families, arrange visits where possible and appropriate, and serve as mediators where we can.
Create training centers and opportunities for vulnerable children.
Fight against sexual exploitation of minors, to prevent HIV/AIDS, sexually-transmitted infections, and teen pregnancy. We fight for their access to regular food, clean water, and medical care.
Protect child victims of armed conflict and torture, and fight against any form of discrimination that can prevent a child from achieving his or her true potential.
Provide moral and material assistance for the children in their care.
Reorient children into formal education when appropriate, and children for whom this isn’t an option into viable vocational training programs.
