Jennifer Green
Writing computer manuals and producing marketing materials may not seem like good training for saving the world. But in Jennifer Green's case, they were perfect practice for her new role in the nonprofit world.
After seven years working for Silicon Valley, the former technology marketer now helps with development and volunteer recruiting at EMQ Children & Family Services. The work may be similar, she says, but its impact is far greater — which was the whole idea.
"Feeling like I'm making a difference in kids' lives is what I enjoy the most about this job," said Green. "I know the money I'm bringing in has a direct benefit for kids in need."
Nationally recognized for its innovative programs for children suffering from trauma, depression and mental illness, EMQ helps thousands of families get the help they need from physicians, nurses, psychologists, and other clinical support professionals.
The Campbell, CA.-based organization is often willing to try volunteer-based approaches to raising and saving money. Green is responsible for one of these, a volunteer grant writing program. EMQ also recruits volunteer mentors, event planners, and even retail workers for its community thrift stores.
VolunteerMatch has been a trusted resource according to Green. "Finding qualified writers takes careful screening. Even though some live in other states and work remotely, we've been lucky to find several talented writers thanks to VolunteerMatch."
She said the key has been to recruit passionate volunteers wherever they may live — not just in California. A great way to do just that is through VolunteerMatch's "Virtual" category for work that can be done anywhere. Grant writing opportunities are especially popular there.
But Green cautions other nonprofits looking for volunteer grant writers to be sure to ask prospects what they want to get out of the experience: while some volunteers are perfect for large, complex grants, others should be assigned shorter-term projects.
"Some volunteer grant writers are thinking about pursuing grant writing as a career, but others just want to help raise money for your organization," she said.
